Alec McFadden, from Merseyside TUC, said: “Everyone at the meeting agreed we need to be a political party or coalition.”

He said after drawing up their constitution they would be aiming to field candidates in next year’s local elections, or sooner if there are any by-elections.

Mr McFadden said they would also be pushing for a local referendum on the SAR, although calls by the Conservative group on Wirral Council to take this step have already been rejected.
