Dovecot man admits killing Huyton shopkeeper

A MERSEYSIDE man has admitted killing a father of 11 at a newsagents.

Ronald Higgins was charged with murdering Yemeni shop worker Abdo Al-Selwi, but yesterday he admitted the lesser charge of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

His plea was accepted by the prosecution, who told Liverpool Crown Court two psychiatrists had ruled he was suffering from an “abnormality of mind” at the time.

David Steer QC said: “Each of them have expressed the opinion that in their view at the time of the killing his responsibility was substantially impaired as a result of an abnormality of mind.”

Higgins, 37, has been detained at a secure hospital since the Huyton shooting at 7.30am on May 31.

Higgins, of Stonefield Road, Dovecot, had previously denied murder, but had already pleaded guilty to seven further offences. He will be sentenced on May 11.
