Herbert the hairdresser’s new Champu bar defies the crunch

The opening of Champu, the champagne celebration lounge

CELEBRITY hairdresser Herbert Howe said the credit crunch was “marvellous” at an official launch last night for his new champagne lounge in Liverpool.

His new establishment, Champu, at Beetham Plaza off The Strand, stocks the finest Champagnes, served by French sommeliers and priced from £60 to £1,200 per bottle.

But he has also faced criticism from some quarters for launching such an exclusive venue during a recession.

Mr Howe said: “It would upset me to think I was doing something to offend anybody who’d lost their job.

“My whole aim in launching a champagne celebration bar is to make special occasions – such as birthdays or anniversaries – more special in these economically difficult times.

“I think the credit crunch is marvellous because it helps people to tighten their belts and not spend beyond their means. That’s a great thing.

“But people are always going to want to spend some money to celebrate their mum and dad’s birthday, and what goes with birthdays is champagne.

“I came up with the idea because I was wondering where I could go for my 65th birthday in July that wasn’t cheap and casual, and I thought that if I feel that way, others must do too.

“I’ve spent over £250,000 decorating this venue because the people of Liverpool deserve it and it gives them somewhere special to go. I think it will pay for itself with corporate events in the afternoon for up to 40 people. That’s where I think the money will be made.

“A champagne celebration lounge is a unique concept which hasn’t been tried anywhere else, but I’ve already been told by representatives of champagne houses who have visited here that they think it’s something which could be taken all over the world.”

Guests will always have to make a reservation to drink in the “Champagne celebration lounge”, a jacket is required at all times and drinkers will not be able to stand in the seated-only venue.

Patrons will also be able to book a complimentary chauffeur-driven limousine to and from their choice of restaurant.

They will be given complimentary gifts, fresh roses and strawberries dipped in a choice of handmade chocolate.
