A SCOUT leader who killed a father-of-two when he ran a red light was last night jailed.
But Luke McGowan, 22, will be out in just a year, leading to fury from the family of forklift truck driver Paul Read.
Liverpool Crown Court heard yesterday Mr Read, 36, was crossing the junction of Queens Drive and Prescot Road, Old Swan, at 11.35am, on May 29, 2008, when he was run over by student McGowan in his white Ford Escort.
David Owen, prosecuting, said the light had been red for at least five seconds and when the green man came on at the pelican crossing, Mr Read stepped out into the road.
McGowan, a leader with the local Explorer Scouts, slammed on the brakes and called for an ambulance, but Mr Read died from his injuries.
Other drivers who saw the Escort seconds before, described it driving “aggressively”, the court heard.
Judge Gerald Clifton said McGowan, of Balls Road, Prenton, had, in his opinion, “deliberately ignored” the red light.
The defendant pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, was sentenced to two years and banned from the road for four years.
