Dan Hibbert, a faculty advisor, and the man charged with getting to grips with health and safety, said: "A lot of other universities have been put off by the paperwork.
"But, if the Health and Safety Executive comes out to have a look, you’ve got to have it all there."
The project culminates in a four-day national competition at the legendary Silverstone track in July.
The winning university students must combine innovation with something workable that lasts a 20km run.
