War Memorial to be rapaired thanks to cash injection

A CHESHIRE councillor whose uncle is remembered on a memorial has welcomed a Government grant to see the monument to the town’s heroes refurbished.

Frodsham War Memorial is one of 12 sites awarded a share of £50,000 to secure its future.

The Frodsham grant of £6,286 will go towards repairing the joints on the obelisk memorial which overlooks the town, cleaning and re-waxing the plaques, and repainting the railings which were erected after 1945.

Town councillor Brian Lloyd, whose uncle, Wilfred, is honoured on the Grade II listed structure, said he and fellow councillors were pleased there would now be money to put the memorial right.

He said: “Although it’s in reasonable condition itself, the railings are in a bad way and it needs re-pointing.”

Cllr Lloyd’s uncle had died in Ypres, in November, 1917, and is one of many from the area who died in the two world wars.
