ARCHBISHOP of Liverpool the Most Reverend Patrick Kelly has criticised the culture of debt at Liverpool’s Annual Civic Mass.
Joined by Magistrates, circuit judges, councillors and mayors, he pointed to lessons of history proving that inflation could bring out the worst excesses of extremism in a society.
He said: “Debt is debt.
“It remains a negative”.
Commenting on the current economic crisis, Archbishop Kelly said: “Uncertainly and fear about the value of money, especially savings, is not good soil for seeds of wisdom and universal concern for neighbours to grow.”
He added that the crisis touched every aspect of modern life.
His Honour Judge Elgan Edwards DL, Honorary Recorder of Chester, read the first lesson from Isaiah and Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Cllr Steve Rotheram read the second from St Paul.
The Mass was attended by the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Steve Rotheram, City Council Leader Warren Bradley and civic dignitaries from throughout the region.
