LIVERPOOL John Moores University is being forced to cut its number of first year students by 1,000 this year after exceeding its admissions target by 17% last year.
The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) has warned the university that it would incur “significant penalties” if it exceeded the target this year.
Last year 12,000 students were admitted, but this September this will be reduced by 1,000.
The Daily Post understands that faculty deans have been asked to draw up lists of unpopular courses to be culled, but it is not likely to result in redundancies.
The effect of the admission cut will be to stabilise the total numbers of students at LJMU at any one time, bringing the institution back in line with government guidelines.
