Merseyside Police to review the conviction of Eddie Gilfoyle after doubts cast on investigation

POLICE are to review the murder conviction of Eddie Gilfoyle who was jailed 17 years ago for killing his pregnant wife.

Paula Gilfoyle was found hanged in the garage next to the couple’s home in Upton, Wirral, in June 1992.

Her father last night said Mr Gilfoyle should be hanged, never mind stay in prison.

Detectives believed Gilfoyle fooled his wife, 32, into writing a suicide note and hung her.

Last week a national newspaper claimed a dossier of investigative "blunders" at the scene cast doubt on the conviction.

Merseyside Police has confirmed it is assessing information with the Crown Prosecution Service.

The paper claims notes not seen by the 1993 jury state the doctor who declared Mrs Gilfoyle dead told police she had died up to six hours earlier – when her hospital porter husband was at work.

Merseyside Police has denied the papers existed and have launched a search for the documents.

Paula’s father, Cliff Carbert, from Moreton, said his daughter was murdered and her husband’s conviction should stand.

He said: “My daughter was well-loved around here. She was special to me. She looked for the fun in life.

“But she got taken in by him.” Mr Carbert said Paula was already planning for another baby and would not have taken her life.
