Paul and Laura Makin prepare for a long stay in San Antonio jail after their 24kg cocaine arrest

THESE are the faces of the Mersey couple arrested in Venezuela after a £1.2m drugs bust, as they say goodbye to their children.

Paul and Laura Makin’s twins and her son and daughter from a previous relationship were placed in the care of social services on the island of Margarita, after the Birkenhead pair were stopped in an airport allegedly with 24kg of cocaine last week.

Mr Makin said he thought he was carrying diamonds, and described the realisation it was cocaine as “like a knife in my heart.”

Grandmother Catherine Webb, 52, of Birkenhead, told reporters: “The children have been in floods of tears because they have none of their toys. They are scared and confused. They just keep asking for their mum.

“I am particularly worried about the twins...they are so young.”

The couple will spend a month in San Antonio jail.
