A GRANDFATHER who smuggled drugs worth £824,000 into the UK in a camper van, accompanied by his grandson, was jailed for five years.
Robert Orchard, 65, was travelling with his daughter and nine-year-old grandson when he was arrested at Dover’s Eastern Docks with 286 kilos of cannabis resin.
Orchard, of no fixed address, hid the illicit consignment under the rear bunk of the Fiat camper van as he returned from France on a ferry on April 19 last year.
A judge sentencing him at Canterbury Crown Court said he had placed his own daughter at risk of arrest because she was accused of being involved.
Orchard pleaded guilty to importing cannabis resin on August 4 last year, following an investigation by officers from HM Revenue and Customs.
