Congestion cuts earn Merseyside £889,000 government award

EFFORTS to cut congestion on Merseyside roads have earned the region a government cash boost of more than £889,000.

The Department for Transport has awarded the sum after the overall "level of travel" – the number of people travelling on designated urban routes – fell by 7.6%.

The average journey time also fell by 2.2%, meaning the region will receive close to £300,000 more than it was awarded in July last year.

But reaction to the news has been mixed. While Merseytravel has welcomed the funding, some authority members say the Government has already run down the region’s travel aspirations by turning down an extension which would have kept Merseyside in the running for more than £100m of European funding.

It is still hoped a deal can be done to save that cash.
