Halewood's JLR staff to vote on pay freeze and four-day week

STAFF at Jaguar Land Rover, in Halewood, will vote next week on a plan to accept a one-year pay freeze and a four-day week in exchange for a guarantee of no compulsory redundancies for two years.

The deal has been agreed between leaders at union Unite and managers at the embattled car giant, which has seen sales slump since the credit crunch.

About 1,800 agency, production and management workers have lost their jobs at the firm in recent months.

The workers will vote in the coming week on the proposed deal, which is aimed at saving Jaguar up to £70m.

JLR, which is owned by Indian car giant Tata Motors, employs around 2,000 people at Halewood, mostly building Jaguar X-Type cars and Land Rover Freelander 2 4x4s.

Dave Osborne, national officer of Unite, said: “We have now outlined the details of the framework agreement to shop stewards across JLR.

“They overwhelmingly supported the recommendation from the negotiating committee that this document should go to our members with a recommendation that it is accepted.

“The agreement includes a shorter working week for manufacturing, with a two-hour reduction in production and a one-hour reduction in pay. It will be a four-day week in manufacturing areas.”
