Tories plan to ‘ground’ tearaways

CHILD tearaways who make the lives of others a misery could be grounded for up to a month under new Tory plans.

Young people, aged 10 to 17, could be confined to their homes, except to attend school, and face a police cell if they fail to comply.

Police will also be given new powers to haul young troublemakers off the street and hold them at police stations before making parents pick them up.

Shadow home secretary Chris Grayling said the measures will help divert young people from a spiral leading to more serious crime.

Speaking at the Local Government Association in his first major speech since his appointment, he said there was no modern equivalent to the “clip around the ear from a local bobby”.
