Bargain supermarket chain Lidl refused plans for new store by Liverpool City Council

SUPERMARKET chain Lidl has been refused permission to build a new store in south Liverpool.

The low-cost store had wanted to build a 1,300sq metre store on the former New Mersey Motor Company site, in Speke Hall Road, in Speke.

But the city council’s planning committee was told that it would break policies designed to encourage retail developments in district centres.

A number of residents attended the meeting to speak in support of the application for the low-cost chain.

They spoke of the cost of living going up and the need for a discount retailer in the area.

Planning chairman Cllr Dave Irving said: “We all agree that the state this site is in is an absolute disgrace.

“The problem is we have policies that have to be adhered to.

“This would go against retail policy.”
