MERSEY MPs joined the revolt against plans to part-privatise Royal Mail yesterday – as hundreds of postal workers protested outside Parliament.
Nine local MPs are among 124 Labour MPs fighting the Government’s proposals, warning the “universal service” delivering post across the UK for the same price – is under threat.
The revolt has won bac king from mainstream MPs, including Louise Ellman (Riverside), Claire Curtis-Thomas (Crosby) and Stephen Hesford (Wirral West), as well as “serial rebels”.
Former Cabinet minister Peter Hain condemned the plans – with ex-deputy prime minister John Prescott expected to back the rebels within days.
Last night, Gordon Brown was warned the proposed sell-off of up to 30% of Royal Mail to a foreign postal operator was “electoral suicide” that would fatally split the party.
But Business Secretary Lord Mandelson is expected to introduce a Bill in Parliament tomorrow, paving the way for a landmark vote before the summer.
