Pensioner fined for rollerblading on streets

A SENIOR citizen ordered to pay fines and costs of more than £2,000, for skating in a pedestrianised area, has vowed to continue the fight in a higher court.

Retired Geoffrey Dornan, 71, from Ormskirk, was found guilty of breaking a Sefton Council by-law by rollerblading through Chapel Street, in Southport.

He was ordered to pay a £300 fine and £1,800 costs.

Mr Dornan told the court: "It's said I weave in and out of people – I don't say that's a bad thing.

"I try where possible to go behind people so that I don't get in their way.”

Defence solicitor Andrew Scott told the court that rollerblading is “restricted” rather than “prohibited” on Chapel Street.

Mr Dornan was appearing at North Sefton Magistrates Court for the third time in six weeks.

The first case brought by Merseyside Police was dropped on January 12, but Sefton Council continued with their own legal action against the pensioner.

That case was opened on January 19, but was adjourned until yesterday.
