A CANCER sufferer has admitted smuggling 1.5kg of cannabis through Liverpool airport after being caught by police.
But Brian Anthony Martin yesterday claimed he had only imported the Class B drug, with an estimated value of £5,000, as a means of personal pain relief as he goes through chemotherapy.
Martin, 26, was arrested at Liverpool airport on February 8 after hiding a herbal form of the drug in footwear and luggage.
He admitted importing the drugs after flying in from Amsterdam.
District Judge Trevor Chatalier heard Martin has a previous conviction for drug offences dating back to 2004.
He committed the case to Liverpool Crown Court, saying his sentencing powers as a magistrate were not great enough.
