Peter Mandelson's warning to ‘Royal Mail sell-off’ critics

LORD MANDELSON remained on collision course with unions and Labour MPs last night after launching a furious attack on opponents of his plans to part-privatise Royal Mail.

The Business Secretary criticised the use of union “scare tactics” and warned party rebels they risked handing the Tories victory at the next general election.

But Commons Leader Harriet Harman, reported to be at the forefront of Cabinet dissent, urged a “calm debate” in a bid to find a compromise and avoid a damaging Commons revolt.

And Communications Workers Union (CWU) general secretary Billy Hayes said he was “a bit baffled” by the peer’s language – saying he believed the union enjoyed “good relations” with the minister.
