Ofcom asks listeners for views on City Talk radio playing music

City Talk Radio

OFCOM wants listeners' views on plans to allow Liverpool’s only talk show station to play music.

City Talk 105.9 has asked if it can mix music with its speech-led programmes during weekday daytimes.

It is currently a 24-hour speech service and would continue to be speech-only at peak times, including breakfast or drivetime and weekend late breakfast.

But if Ofcom changes its licence the Bauer Radio-owned station, which has 63,000 listeners a week according to the latest figures, would be able to play soft pop music at quieter times.

The change would also mean City Talk would share its programming with Bauer’s other Liverpool stations, Magic 1548 and Radio City 96.7, at weekends.

Ofcom has said it believes the change would significantly alter the station's character and wants to hear people's views on the proposal.

The closing date for responses is March 31.
