Mersey Gateway revamp plans go to Halton Council

DETAILS of how the multi-million pound Mersey Gateway scheme will improve the area’s public transport infrastructure are to go before Halton council next month.

They include a scheme that will see the Silver Jubilee Bridge improved to allow for cycle lane and pedestrian access to run alongside the new bridge.

Plans are also afoot for a new, “high-quality” bus network to create easier access from residential areas to south Merseyside’s business, commercial and leisure offerings.

Halton leaders are hailing it as revitalisation of the original Runcorn Busway system.

There is also potential for a discounted travel scheme for youngsters.

Halton council leader Cllr Tony McDermott said the improvements to the current Runcorn Bridge would take place alongside the planned opening of the new bridge.

Cllr McDermott said: “The Mersey Gateway Sustainable Transport Strategy demonstrates the kind of added benefits that the new bridge can bring to residents of Halton and the wider region.”
