Another round for pub songs at Liverpool music festival

THERE was a giant spider, tall ships, and massive concerts, but one of 2008’s most talked about events was something a little more humble.

What The Rightful Owners of the Song concert, held last November at the Philharmonic Hall, lacked in famous names, it made up for with a celebration of grass-roots Scouse pride and talent.

The unusual evening took some of the city’s best pub singers and gave them a chance to take centre stage alongside the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

The concert was a one-off commission of the Culture Company, but went down so well that organiser Jonathan Raisin is in talks for it to hopefully become a regular event.

“The show got everyone really excited and I was really pleasantly surprised,” he said.

“It was such a success that it’s taken on a life of its own, and I’m definitely hoping it is going to happen again.”

In the meantime, the pub singing tradition is being kept alive and well at the Liverpool pub on James Street in the city centre, which has started up its own weekly Rightful Owners of the Song reunion.
