Manslaughter case dropped for Dreamspace creator Maurice Agis

A PENSIONER whose inflatable artwork broke free and killed two women will not face another trial for manslaughter.

The Crown Prosecution Service has decide d that artist Maurice Agis, 77, should no longer be criminally held to account for the Dreamspace tragedy in Durham in 2006.

His colourful Dreamspace creation took off at Riverside Park, Chester-le-Street, killing Claire Furmedge, 38, and Elizabeth Collings, 68. Around 27 others were injured when the PVC structure flipped into the air.

Over the last fortnight, lawyers have been deciding whether to schedule a retrial for the defendant after the jury failed to reach a verdict at Newcastle Crown Court.

Liverpool-based carnival organiser Brouhaha, who were behind the event, have already admitted breaching safety laws.

Mr Agis, along with Brouhaha and Chester-le-Street Council, will now all be sentenced for health and safety breaches on March 26.
