Union fears over 125 jobs at United Biscuits in Aintree

UNION leaders say 125 jobs at United Biscuits’ (UB) Aintree factory could be offshored to India under a restructuring programme.

UB employs 750 people at its Aintree plant making products including Jacobs cream crackers. The company says no decisions on restructuring have yet been made.

Trade union Unite says any restructuring would be in stark contrast to last year when workers won "bonuses and star awards for their achievements".

Regional officer Debbie Brannan said: "The decision by United Biscuits to look into offshoring possibilities and visit these sites in India comes at a bad time for all, but for our members at the Liverpool site this is an especially worrying development.

"Our members’ hard work over the last year has seen the company announce healthy profits and staff must be rewarded by the company.

"We will do everything we can to make sure these jobs are not offshored to India. We will be seeking an urgent meeting with the company to discuss their proposals."

A United Biscuits spokeswoman said: "UB constantly reviews its operations to ensure they support the business in delivering sustainable growth and consumer value. No decisions have been made about a restructuring programme."
