Revealed: Secret plans for new political party in Wirral

David Kirwan

SECRET talks among business leaders and politicians in Wirral could lead to the creation of a new political party, it has emerged.

Partly prompted by the row over the controversial Strategic Asset Review (SAR) of Wirral’s libraries and cultural facilities, the new party idea has been gaining ground in recent weeks.

Leading Merseyside solicitor and Independent councillor David Kirwan is being mooted as a potential leader of the new party, and is thought to have the support of a number of other prominent local business people.

There has been no comment from Cllr Kirwan, who resigned the Conservative whip on Wirral Council, but remains a councillor on the authority.

However, he has been a prominent critic of the SAR and is leading efforts to have the measures called in for a judicial review at the High Court.
