Jonathan Pryce to star in Pinter’s The Caretaker at the Liverpool Everyman

Apart from the Everyman’s 50th anniversary gala in 2004, this will be the first time the actor has performed there since the 1970s.

Nobel Laureate Pinter gave him his blessing for the role before the playwright’s death last Christmas, Pryce revealed.

He said: “He knew how much the Everyman meant to me and was hoping to come to see it. That won’t be, but we try and honour a great man in a great theatre.”

The three act tragicomedy will be directed by 79-year-old Mr Morahan, former deputy director of the National Theatre and ex-head of plays for the BBC.

Everyman and Playhouse artistic director Gemma Bodinetz, who worked as Pinter’s assistant on a production of the play at the beginning of her career, said: “We are very excited to have one of the great Everyman alumni coming back. When Pete came here last year it was the start of our promise to bring actors of this calibre to our theatre.”

Pryce was awarded a Liverpool University honorary degree in 2006.
