Formby barber’s shop is hit by out of control Volkswagen
A BARBER had a lucky escape when a car crashed into his shop.
Martin Kelly had just seen a customer through the front door when an out-of-control Volkswagen Polo careered towards him.
The 86-year-old woman driver is believed to have lost control of the car on Church Road, Formby, after inadvertently hitting the accelerator instead of the brake.
Mr Kelly, 40, who owns Church Road Barbers, said: “I took my hand away from the door handle and saw a dot in the corner of my eye coming at me.
“I looked to my side and saw a car going about 50mph heading for the shop.
“It hit the shop and I collapsed. All the brick work from the gable end fell on me and I was covered.
“I was an inch away from the car – it was that close.
“My reactions are sharp because I box, but if I didn’t box I don’t think I would have reacted as quick to get out of the way. I would be dead.”
