A UNIVERSITY vice-chancellor has urged against a rise in tuition fees.
John Cater, vice-chancellor at Ormskirk-based Edge Hill university, has spoken out as the government reviews tuition fees.
Polls suggest up to two-thirds of vice- chancellors want to remove the cap on the current level of around £3,000. A study saw 12 university vice- chancellors suggesting a wide range of figures that they believed fees should be set at, with an average of £6,500.
The report suggests that a fee of £7,000 "may discourage some from enrolling in higher education”.
And last night Dr Cater said: “In these straitened times, universities have to accept that this is the wrong time to demand more.”
