Wirral Council cash for local transport schemes

LOCAL communities across Wirral are to be given a share of £200,000 to spend on key road improvements in their areas.

The move follows a successful pilot project in which local Area Forums were given cash to spend on small schemes.

Eleven Area Forums across the borough will be given £18,200 each which can be spent on small-scale road safety measures, traffic calming and other works requested by the community.

One of the areas which has piloted the scheme is the Bromborough/Eastham forum which has used some of the cash to carry out works in historic Port Sunlight to help boost tourism, along with parts of Eastham, Bromborough and New Ferry.

Local councillor Steve Niblock has championed the scheme in his ward, and says it has allowed works to be carried out quickly, without the risk of central decision-making diverting cash elsewhere in the borough.

A report to tonight’s meeting of Wirral Council’s ruling cabinet will recommend the scheme be rolled out to all Area Forums across the borough.

Cllr Niblock said: “It allows small projects, which were ‘lost’ when dealt with centrally, to be carried out.”
