Fire crews in action as blaze engulfs closed club
FIRE crews have spent the night battling a severe blaze in a residential area of Wavertree.
The derelict Churchills building, a disused former Conservative Club on Church Road, went up in flames at around 9.20pm yesterday evening.
Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said it had sent 12 appliances to the scene to attempt to control the fire consuming the boarded-up single- storey building, includ-ing eight fire engines and an aerial appli-ance, plus vehicles with back-up supplies.
Seven main jets and six fire fighters with breathing apparatus were tackling the blaze last night as police closed Church Road to traffic.
Residents said they had heard explosions in the flames, and it is believed a small number of disabled people living close to the building – just a few hundred yards away from the historic Bluecoat school – have been evacuated as a precaution.
Fire crews were expected to work through the night to extinguish and damp down the fire.
