STEVEN GERRARD and Jamie Carragher were among the personalities at the launch of a play recapturing the magic of Liverpool FC’s legendary Champions League win in Istanbul.

One Night In Istanbul, which comes to the Empire theatre in July, was penned by Nicky Allt, one of the co-writers of city theatre hit, Brick Up The Mersey Tunnels.

Last night, Carragher’s Cafe Sport England, in Stanley Street, was the location for a glitzy launch which attracted his teammates and players from that special night, including Xabi Alonso.

He said: “It was a great night for the lads and a great night for all fans. Everyone has their own story, and for a local lad to turn it into a play, good luck to him.”

Liverpool actor John McArdle and comic John Bishop were unveiled as the leading cast members.

A lifelong Red, writer Allt knew Liverpool’s comeback triumph in the 2005 Champions League final over AC Milan was always ripe for the picking.
