He said: “I was there. I tried to get out of the ground at half-time, but this big Turkish steward headlocked me and kept me in. And to this day I am eternally grateful.
“I thought on the way back, even people who do not like football will remember this night, because it is just so strong. I thought: ‘I’m going to have to write something about this’.”
Stand-up Bishop has recently turned his hand to acting, and could be seen in last night’s episode of Channel 4 drama, Skins.
He said: “Theatre in Liverpool is really strong at the moment and the play is about the people and their experiences – and Istanbul is a great backdrop.”
