Tom Hicks: No cash yet for new Liverpool FC stadium - but we will build it

He also dismissed speculation he could be about to strike a deal to sell the club to interested parties in either Dubai or Kuwait.

“None of those turned out to be real,” he insisted.

But this is not likely to dampen speculation the Americans will be forced to sell in July when the £350m they borrowed when they re-financed the debt taken out when they bought LFC expires.

He insisted he was committed to remaining at the club long term.

“I’m going to be here for the next five years, Rafa is going to be here for the next five years, and I think George is going to be here for the next five years, but I can’t speak for George.

“We’ll continue to do what we’re doing. We’re expanding our Liverpool brand in Asia and the Middle East.

“We’re making a tour this summer which will be brand expanding and profitable.”

Jay McKenna, spokesman for the Spirit of Shankly fan group, said: “Once again, we have been left wondering how long it’s going to be before we get the new stadium.

“I can’t really see it coming under the American ownership. They need to leave Liverpool.

“If they are looking for support by agreeing Rafa’s contract, they are not going to get it. If they have done this as a way of winning support from the fans, they have been very naive.”

Les Lawson, secretary of the official supporters club, said: “At this moment, it’s about being happy Rafa has signed a new contract.

“Signing a new contract will make the club more attractive to potential buyers.

“The most significant date, off the pitch, will come at the end of June beginning of July, when the loan expires.”
