Germans prefer a mobile to a partner

YOUNG people in Germany would rather give up their boyfriend or girlfriend than their mobile phone subscription, according to Europe’s telecoms Commissioner Viviane Reding.

And that, she said in her first weekly website broadcast from Brussels, is part of the success of the EU’s telecoms policy.

Ms Reding said a new report to be published this week showed that, in spite of the economic downturn, Europe was doing “rather well” in the telecoms market.

“Consumers may hesitate to buy a new car or television these days, but they are communicating more via their phones and the internet, especially in Europe.” She added in Europe “practically everyone” had at least one mobile phone.
