Liverpool law firm Kirwans defends political unit after Bahram Noorani defeat

On the case, Mr Kirwan told LDP Legal: “The first six months overall, it’s been a success. We’re disappointed with what happened with the Noorani affair, but you win some and you lose some, that’s the way of the law.

“I’m sure that some of the ones that are coming up will be successes.”

The unit also took on Wirral West Tory Parliamentary candidate Esther McVey’s libel fight with sitting Labour MP Stephen Hesford. It acted for Margaret Kalil, a former chairwoman of Wirral West Conservatives. Mrs Kalil successfully forced an apology and compensation from another senior Tory, Cllr David Elderton, after a series of unfounded email allegations.

Mr Kirwan said the increase in volume of cases also meant “one or two” more solicitors could be drafted into the unit.

He added: “We’re pleased with how it’s going. By creating the unit, it’s drawn more work to the firm. It was set up on the back of already having handled or in the process of handling politically-related cases. It wasn’t like it was a standing start – there was momentum there.”
