A CEMETERY was closed yesterday while police exhumed the body of a murder victim in the hope that scientific advances can finally uncover the dead man’s identity 18 years after he was killed.
Detectives from Sussex Police’s major crime branch also hope the technological strides made since the middle-aged man’s death in 1991 could also help identify his killer.
Detective Chief Inspector Andy Griffiths, leading the operation, said: “This case has been reviewed, as are all unsolved cases periodically, in an effort to establish if new techniques may be brought to bear.
“Following discussions with senior scientists, I made a decision to apply to the relevant authorities for permission to exhume the body, as it appears that re-examination of the body, utilising techniques that did not exist in 1991, may assist us in identifying the man.”
