A Catholic school governor, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: “I think the fact that this was even in consultation is disgraceful. There aren’t as many Catholic schools in Wirral as there are non-Catholic schools, and so generally Catholic pupils have to travel farther.
“If you take away this bus pass, you are putting an extra burden on parents, which may take away their right to choose.”
Religious teacher Conor Mulholland, of St Mary’s College, Wallasey, said: “This was an absurd idea.
“The consultation was myopic and unkind to target children in this way.”
The same consultation process, held by Cheshire County Council ,ended with parents paying 20% of the transport bill if their children went to a Catholic school.
