COUNCILLORS are in limbo over where to site a new St Helens rugby league statue.
More than 10,000 people voted for current captain Keiron Cunningham to be immortalised on the new Saints tribute.
But councillors are still unsure where to place the statue before moving it to the club’s new stadium.
The statue was supposed to be displayed in Victoria Square, outside the town hall.
But that is being reviewed after comments from residents.
The council now has five other options – including the newly landscaped Chalon Way and the current ground.
But those could all prove too expensive because underground utilities would have to be moved.
Council leader Brian Spencer said: “The statue should be finished by late summer and we do not want to hide it away in a warehouse until it can be placed at the new stadium.
“The site outside the town hall may prove to be the only safe town centre accessible location.”
The council decided two years ago to create a “son of Saints” statue, based on a vote from people in the town.
Cunningham beat Tom van Vollenhoven (8,820 votes) and Paul Wellens, who had 1,501.
Sculptor Vanessa Marston is creating the one-and-a-half times life-size statue.
