‘Forgotten’ ship of the Titanic story goes on show at Maritime Museum

A MODEL of one of a ship which tried to reach the sinking Titanic goes on display at Merseyside Maritime Museum on Friday.

The four-masted steamer Mount Temple was 49 miles away from Titanic when the huge liner struck the iceberg.

At 12.30am on April 15, 1912, her radio operator received a distress call.

The captain, James Moore, immediately turned his ship around and steered for the SOS position. After three hours at full speed, he was within 14 miles of Titanic’s position, but then had to slow down because of ice.

Ironically, Captain Arthur Rostron, of the Carpathia, who was still some miles short of the SOS position, found Titanic’s lifeboats and achieved lasting fame.

Captain Moore, who went almost exactly to the SOS position, found nothing and has largely been forgotten.
