THE University of Liverpool caused outrage among students when it left closure-threatened departments off new signs put up around campus.
In scenes which campaigners against the proposals said were “fitting of a Charlie Chaplin or Carry On film”, staff tried to take down the signs as students flocked to take photographs.
It is understood the “genuine mistake” was blamed on the building’s janitor.
The university is currently considering whether to shut four departments – politics, communications, philosophy and statistics.
The sign briefly erected outside the Roxby building left off politics and communications, both currently based there.
Save Our Students (SOS) spokesman Paul Athans said although the incident was “laughable”, it raised serious questions about the consultation period on the plans drawn up by vice chancellor Sir Howard Newby.
