A man and a woman have been killed in a crash on the M6 Motorway at the Thelwall Viaduct

TWO people have been killed in a motorway pile-up on the M6 at the Thelwall Viaduct.

The crash happened shortly after 9pm last night, and involved three cars.

The people who were killed were a man and woman travelling in the same car.

No one else is believed to have been injured.

The accident, which happened between Junctions 21 and 20, completely closed all four lanes of the motorway, leading to delays.

An initial assessment of the scene was still being made late last night, but a police spokeswoman said: “Traffic is being diverted off the M6 southbound at Junction 21 so the tail-backs, although they have built up, will not be too severe.

“Traffic which is caught behind the scene will be diverted off the motorway once the traffic at the rear has been moved.”

The northbound carriageway was not affected.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision, and are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed anything.
