A NURSE who stabbed her ex-partner in front of their five-month-old child has been cautioned by a nursing watchdog.
Paula Sharon Mezzetta, 33, from West Derby, plunged a kitchen knife into her former partner after he was violent towards her and used the baby as “a pawn”.
She was given a suspended prison sentence for the crime.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council has now ruled her fitness to practise was impaired as she had breached their strict code of conduct. But because her behaviour did not cause a patient direct or indirect harm and she was sorry, they handed her a five-year-caution order.
She can still work as a nurse but employers have to be told why the caution was imposed.
Mezzetta was given a 45-week suspended prison sentence following the attack but the NMC’s Conduct and Competence panel heard she has ended the destructive relationship.
She now has a new relationship and has had a second child.
Her probation officer wrote of Mezzetta’s remorse, shame and regret over her actions.
The panel said: “This case is too serious to impose no sanction.”
