RESIDENTS living near the run-down block of flats at the centre of the terrorist plot investigation returned home last night after another day of upheaval.
After being ordered to evacuate Highgate Street at around 2.30pm, they were left to fend for themselves until, at 8pm, they were told they would be put up in emergency accommodation overnight.
But less than an hour after around 50 evacuees were taken to Wavertree Tennis Centre in three buses, the police cordon was lifted and people were allowed to go back home.
Many of those returning last night spoke of their shock, anger and disbelief at the latest turn of events.
Mother-of-four Ann-Marie Bennett, 32, said: “The police didn’t give us any reason why we were being evacuated.
“It’s been a total nightmare and I don’t want to live here any more because of all the things that have happened.”
Wheelchair-bound Betty Morgan, 75, had to leave her house in only her nightdress and dressing gown."
