Wirral's Bidston Windmill to open to the public after £120,000 restoration project

A MAJOR £120,000 project to restore Bidston Windmill to its former glory has been completed – six years after the landmark closed to the public.

The windmill, a part of the Wirral skyline since 1800, once attracted hundreds of visitors every weekend, but was closed to the public following concerns about the condition of its roof.

Since then, supporters, led by the Friends of Bidston Hill, have campaigned for funding to restore it to its former glory.

Around 50 invited guests gathered on Bidston Hill on Saturday for the first look inside the windmill since £120,000 was spent on repairing it.

The project, funded by Wirral Council, has seen the brick windmill’s crumbling roof and internal flooring replaced, and metal ladders replacing wooden ones with non-slip material on each rung and safety rails.

Rock Ferry councillor Chris Meaden, a former mayor of Wirral, was invited to perform the opening ceremony.
