Bananas boost for African fuel shortage

A UNIVERSITY student claims to have an unusual solution to Africa’s fuel shortage.

PhD student Joel Chaney believes bananas could provide some of the world’s poorest people with the fuel needed for everyday life.

The University of Nottingham student thinks the skin, leaves and stems of the fruit, which are readily available in countries like Rwanda, can be formed into briquettes and then burnt for energy.

He said: “A big problem in the developing world is firewood.

“Waste for fuel is key to sustainable development.”
