Commuters get on their bikes

COMMUTERS are increasingly turning to pedal power in the economic downturn, a leading bicycle retailer said today.

Halfords said it had seen a 50% rise in the number of people buying bikes through the Government’s Cycle to Work scheme. The firm, which sold 34,000 bikes through the scheme, said people were looking for cheaper and greener transport, as well as wanting to get fit.

Halfords said it had sold 80,000 bikes through Cycle to Work, which offers tax incentives to help staff buy bicycles, since the scheme began operating in 2005.

Chief executive David Wild said the financial benefits of the scheme meant that customers had been able to buy higher specification products.

“We are delighted with the strength of our bike sales.”
