Dettori key to Fantasia Guineas bid

FRANKIE DETTORI could be the key to which Classic Fantasia runs in following yesterday’s superb victory in the Leslie Harrison Memorial Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket.

American owner George Strawbridge wants the Italian to maintain his partnership with the Sadler’s Wells filly after the pair landed yesterday’s Classic Trial by seven lengths.

Strawbridge already has the John Gosden-trained Rainbow View, 13-8 favourite with the sponsors and Victor Chandler for the stanjames.com 1,000 Guineas, but whether Luca Cumani’s filly joins her at Newmarket or heads for the French equivalent may depend on Dettori’s availability.

As first jockey to Godolphin he may ride on the Sheikh Mohammed-owned operation’s runner in the fillies’ Classic on May 3.

Rainbow View and Fantasia finished first and second in the Fillies Mile at Ascot at the end of last season, with the former going well in a seven-furlong gallop before racing at Newmarket yesterday.

Fantasia is a 7-2 chance with BlueSquare and Skybet, but may head to Longchamp for the French Guineas on May 10.

Strawbridge said: “I am just thrilled Fantasia is so good and has trained on.

“I wouldn’t rule out both fillies running in the English Guineas as there are many days left before the race.

“I am very lucky to have two such good fillies. I am heading back to the States tonight and will let some days go by and see what happens.

“I just want to enjoy this win as Fantasia is a very special filly.

“There are various factors to be weighed up, and one of the main ones would be if we can get Frankie, as he suits this horse very well.”

Dettori added: “If she does come back to Newmarket I won’t be able to ride her as I have a horse to ride for Godolphin.”
