Liverpool bestows Freedom award on families of the Hillsborough 96

THE 96 families were officially handed the Freedom of the City of Liverpool at an emotional ceremony last night.

Those who lost loved ones congregated at the Town Hall where they were joined by top city dignitaries and club officials.

Trevor Hicks, president of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, signed for the honour on behalf of the bereaved families.

He told those assembled in the Grand Ballroom: “I do not think anywhere in the world could have been as supportive as this city has been.

“It is with great honour and humility that I accept this.”

Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Rafael Benitez, Alan Hansen and Alan Kennedy joined the families for the ceremony.
