Liverpool helicopter pilot remembered at memorial service for oil rig crash victims

THE families of 16 workers killed when their helicopter crashed in the North Sea were told that the men were heroes who will never be forgotten.

James Edwards, 33, from Fazakerley, was among the victims of the tragedy two weeks ago.

A dozen buses carried around 400 friends and relatives to a memorial service in Aberdeen yesterday.

Many of them wept as a candle was lit for each victim were lit inside the Kirk of St Nicholas Uniting.

Among the 1,000- strong congregation were Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond and the Prince of Wales.

Presiding over the service, the Rev Andrew Jolly, chaplain to the UK oil and gas industry, urged people to sign the book of condolence for the dead.

He added: “It serves to remind us of those who are the heroes in this industry.”

The 16 victims were returning from BP’s Miller platform when the Super Puma went down.
