A LIVERPOOL hospital has seen cases of superbug C difficile rise by a third, despite a national reduction.

Between October and December, 2008, Aintree hospital recorded 109 cases of the infection– compared to 73 in the same period in 2007.

However, latest Health Protection Agency figures show most other Merseyside hospitals saw a drop.

The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen hospitals recorded a reduction from 189 to 129 cases over the same period, St Helens and Whiston more than halved its cases from 120 to 52 and Arrowe Park’s cases dropped from 145 to 65.

Southport and Ormskirk’s rose from 25 to 37, and Alder Hey recorded three cases.

An Aintree Hospital spokesman said the trust had been working hard to combat the infection.
